American's Thanks Giving Day

The pilgrims were a group of English people who believed in a very strict form of "Christianity".The king of England did not allow them to setup their own church.The pilgrims gave up every thing they had in England.They left England to find a place where they could have their own church.They wanted religious freedom.

In 1620,one hundred four pilgrims crossed the Atlantic ocean on small ship called the Mayflower.They intended to start their own colony in northern Virginia(around New York and NewJersy).

The ship met bad weather and sailed far north of Virginia.They finally came to land in an area that is now the state of Massachusetts.They decided to stay.They named their new home plimuth.

The first winter was terrible.Half of the Pilgrims died of disease and cold.The Pilgrims were city people.They did not know anything about farming.In the spring,Indians came to help the Pilgrims.Two of the Indians spoke english!They had lived in England.It seemed to be a miracle.The Indians showed the Pilgrims how to plant corn,beans,and squash("the three sisters").They showed them how to dig for clams and catch lobsters.They taught them how to dig for clams and catch lobsters.They taught them to hunt wild turkeys.One of the Indians,Squanto, made his home near the Pilgrims village.

At the end of the summer of 1621,the Pilgrims had enough food for the whole winter.They decided to have a day of thanks and a feast.They invited their Indian friends.Their homes were small sp they cooked outside.They prepared many kinds of foods.Ninety Indianbraves came.They brought five deer for the feast.

The feast lasted three days.The Pilgrim men and the Indians enjoyed many contests.The Pilgrims later signed a peace treaty with their Indian neighbours.That peace was not broken for 54 years.
